January 28, 2007 - Dickinson, TX - It seems hard to believe that it has
been almost a month since I updated the website, but it definitely has. January
has been a terrible month here on the Texas coast....COLD (for Texas at least)
and very rainy. We keep saying that we will have webbed feet if it keeps up much
longer and yet rain is predicted for much of next week. Most days you just want
to stay inside and keep warm and dry.
Poor Jerry has not been able to do that because he has been going to WORK
everyday. I just say WORK...what's that??? He has been helping the new owner of
Boxes and Mail learn the business and will be free in three more days. WOOHOO!!
We have friends here in the RV park who will be glad as well. We have promised
to show them a bit of Texas since they are from Pennsylvania and Michigan. Now
the weather just has to cooperate.
We have plans to take them to Brenham to the Blue Belle Ice Cream facility and
then Jerry wants to make a side trip to a small town close to there. You see, he
saw a web video about this restaurant up there that he desperately wants to
visit. I often tease Jerry that if a restaurant doesn't serve chicken fried
steak with cream gravy, he just wouldn't have anything to eat. Well this
restaurant that he wants to visit serves chicken fried BACON! Now for those of
you who may not know what chicken fried steak, etc is...well you take a piece of
meat (steak, chicken, or bacon - i guess), dip it in a batter of egg and milk,
then dip it in flour and fry it in a big skillet of grease. Not exactly dietetic
or healthy but pretty good. Now chicken fried bacon is a new one. We have lived
in the south (these are southern dishes) all our lives and NO ONE has ever
chicken fried bacon before. Or, at least, we have never heard of it. So Jerry is
now on a mission to try it out. They serve cream gravy on the side to dip the
bacon in. He should be in HEAVEN! Personally, I think it is going a bit far, but
to each his own. Who knows, I might be raving about it myself.
This will all take place in February or early March as we are only staying in
Houston long enough to go to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on March 13
with friends here. Shortly after that - maybe even the next day - we will be on
the road starting our leisurely journey to Maine for the summer. I will be
making many more updates once we are back on the road. There just hasn't been
much to write about just sitting here in the rain.
