Moosehead Lake
Well , it has been a week since we left on our trip the the Moosehead Lake
Region . I am just now posting because we didn't have much of an
internet connection up there and we have had trouble ever since we got back here
on Thursday . It is working well now so I can tell you about
Moosehead Lake .
Moosehead Lake is the largest fresh water lake totally contained in one state
east of the Mississippi River . It is 65 , 000 acres and it is
BEAUTIFUL . The entire region is very pretty although somewhat
remote . We stayed in a nice campground in Greenville which is the
largest city on the lake . The think that struck us most was the
quiet . Here at Meadowbrook , there is always a low level hum of
activity but not up there . It was very cool and we could even sleep
with the windows open at night with being awakened early the next morning by
some sort of noise . As a matter of fact , it was so cool we
actually had to turn on the furnace .
We did some driving around the area the first couple of days . The
last two days we went out on the lake on two different cruises . The
first was a " Moose cruise " and every cruise before this one for about the past
two weeks had seen a moose but not us . I told Jerry I thought he
was a jinx because we haven't seen any whales up here on two different cruises
and now NO MOOSE! But it was a lovely ride out on the lake in the late afternoon
and we really enjoyed it .
The major feature of the lake is Mt . Kineo . It is a 700 ft "
mountain " made almost entirely of flint rock . It sits on a
peninsula out in the lake and the front side is rather unremarkable .
When you go around the end of the peninsula to the back side you can't help but
be impressed . It a cliff face jutting straight up out of the water
. It is really beautiful .
The last day we went out on the Katahdin which is a 93 year old steamboat .
She is beautiful and we spent 5 hours out on the lake on her . We
went back out to Mt . Kineo and got much close to the shoreline than the day
before . It is really amazing .
We are sure we will go back to this region again next year when we are here .
It has got to be one of my favorite areas in Maine .
